Starting on May 1st, I am starting a series of 20 paintings of downtown Warwick. These paintings will be exhibited in the Albert Wisner Library in the month of September 2011. I figure this is a good place to begin blogging.
The exhibit at the Albert Wisner Library is in the community I live in, I thought it would be a gift to the community to be about this place we call home. For me as an artist, this is about looking deeper, past the pretty scenery, experiencing a place and capturing a fleeting moment. It is also the art of finding beauty everywhere and about possibility. I was very inspired by the Edward Hopper Exhibit this winter at the Whitney. I’ve always been a Hopper fan. That is one of the things that attracted me to Warwick. It has that quaint, wholesome character that is typical in Hoppers work. Through the use of color temperature, light and atmosphere, I’m hoping the unique sense of Warwick can be experienced through my paintings. In spring a whole new breath gets cast into the air in the Hudson Valley with blossoms and farmers markets and hiking and the bike trails. It is a fantastic place to live.
I’m also looking forward to writing about this experience with reflection to painting.
So look for me downtown in the village of Warwick throughout May, I will be out at various times of the day. The paintings will be 9″ x 12″ oil on board, all done plein-air, done in the kind of square between 1st Street and McWen, and Main St. and South Street.
(I will not be painting on May 8, 9, 16, 20-23, and the 25th.)
Many Thanks,
Janet
