On Friday mornings and Monday Mornings in the summer I have the wonderful opportunity to play farm girl at Emmerich Greenhouses. From the beginning of July through September at 8AM I show up on the farm with keens, hat and sun screen, or on rainy days with rain jacket and pants, and muck boots ready to harvest the abundant, diverse, flowers in the Emmerich’s back fields to be sold at the farmers markets in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Warwick. I come with my camera sometimes, and often I come home sketching the women I work with. We are like poetry. Ginny, Patty, Nancy and all the other young girls that come for paid flower therapy. The work is hard on my back, sweaty and repetitive. This kind of work fills my creative soul. I feel in touch with the rhythm of the season and the land. Snapdragons, marigolds , zinnias, verbena, celosia, sunflowers, statice, ageratum and more. I love the idea that I am spreading the beauty of nature all over the city.
