Gold leaf flecks add an oriental quality to this painting. My intention was to silhouette the magnolia branch with the red. I was humbled, challenged and delighted by the beauty of this magnolia branch, In this painting, the apples are solid on the table and the magnolia light and delicate. The timing was right for me to get the magnolia branches in the studio this year. Matisse’s red room painting caught my eye the had recently caught my eye at the MOMA, and I was inspired. I like to push a color to create an emotional response. The gold leaf was added and layered into the background while wet. This is painted on a gallery wrapped canvas.
